wood pellets

Choosing the right litter for your rabbit is more important than you might think (see our article on litters). Indeed, this choice could lead to health problems due to poor hygiene. It’s also about the odors that could be released into your home. In short, this is why choosing the right litter is so important. If you notice a problem with odors or dampness, it means you’re not changing your rabbit’s litter enough, and that’s not good for him or you. That’s why an effective litter should tick all these boxes:

1 – It must be absorbent

As your rabbit relieves itself several times a day (it produces around 300 droppings a day!), it’s important that your litter has good absorption capacity. This will prevent pododermatitis, for example, or reduce the risk of myasthenia gravis, since both these problems are generally linked to urine stagnating on the hair.

2 – It must be safe

Some commercial litters are toxic for your rabbit, and can cause respiratory problems, transit problems and even poisoning. So it’s essential to know the different types of litter, and not be fooled by the sirens of marketing.

3 – It must retain odors

No litter will allow you not to clean it regularly, but some have the ability to absorb odors better than others. If you share your living space with your rabbit’s litter box, this criterion will quickly become essential for you!

4 – It must be comfortable

When we talk about comfort, we’re not talking here about turning your rabbit’s litter into a bed, but about limiting, once again, pododermatitis problems. By regularly stepping on hard surfaces, your rabbit runs the risk of shedding its fur and even irritating the skin on its pretty paws. That’s why it’s best to select a soft litter that won’t irritate those adorable little feet.
