An ideal hay for rabbits

Every day, your rabbit should consume the equivalent of his body volume in hay; this is to wear his teeth properly and ensure good digestion.

However, he should not consume just any dried grass: he needs a very green hay, dust-free, and ideally dried gently at low temperature to avoid the loss of precious nutrients.

And, on these points, Crau hay has it all! Produced and harvested in France, it is gently dried in the sun before being bagged, without being compressed, which allows it to retain all its nutritional qualities and its long fibers, ideal for tooth wear.

The qualities of a 100% French hay

The appellation “Crau hay” does not refer to the composition of this forage (like wheat hay for example), but to its geographical origin. The Crau is indeed a French lowland region, located in the Bouches-du-Rhône department, and classified Natura 2000.

It is a pastoral area where shepherds graze their flocks at the end of the season, who thus benefit from the special qualities of the mixture of plants that grow naturally there: grasses (cocksfoot, fescue, wheatgrass), legumes (red clover, creeping clover, lotus) and other plant varieties.

It is this balanced mixture of botanical varieties, specific to this region, that you will find in our Crau hay bags.

Crau hay has been awarded the Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) (Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée (AOC) in French) label since 1997. It is the only agricultural production not intended for human consumption to benefit from this designation.

A mineral-rich composition, perfect for young rabbits

Rich in magnesium, sodium and calcium (10g/kg dry matter), this hay is ideal for growing rabbits (i.e. up to about 6 months for Dwarf rabbits, and up to about 1 year for giants) because it promotes proper skeletal development.

After this age, we recommend mixing it with another hay, less rich in calcium, such as our organic Normandy hay to reduce the risk of kidney stone formation.
