Hay, the staple food for rabbits
Did you know that there is a food that our rabbits can consume at will, which does not make them fat, but on the contrary, is essential to their health, maintains their teeth and contributes to a better digestion? Well, it’s hay!
Every day, your rabbit should consume the equivalent of its body volume in hay. It should be offered to him at will, and left at his disposal at all times. Moreover, you will quickly see that this is not only good for his body: looking for the best strand, the one that crunches perfectly under the tooth, the one that smells better than the others… it’s a healthy activity that will keep your rabbit busy for many hours!
If your rabbit consistently soils the hay you put in his litter box and then refuses to eat it, it may be time to opt for a hanging hay rack that you can put above the litter box!
The best of French hay, without pesticides
It has been 20 years since Michel and Alain, cereal farmers from Normandy, chose to cultivate their plots organically. They sow permanent or temporary meadows for 4 years. This allows the land to rest between two cereal crops, and local botanical varieties to grow freely: grasses (ryegrass, fescue, timothy, meadow-grass, bromus), legumes (clovers, lucerne) and other species.
Benefiting from the AB label (french for Organic Agriculture) and the Ecocert label, this hay is grown without pesticides or synthetic fertilizers. Cut in early summer, it is dried by ventilation in a barn after 48 hours of pre-drying in the field. This technique preserves an aerated forage retaining most of the nutritional value of the fresh grass.
An ideal hay for all ages
Less rich in calcium than Crau hay (3.6 g/kg versus almost 10 for Crau hay), organic Normandy hay is suitable for all rabbits, from youngsters to seniors, including those suffering from kidney stones.
Its special drying method and non-compressive bagging guarantee a very green hay, with long, thick and crunchy fibers, as well as a dust-free food, a particularly important quality for rabbits prone to respiratory problems.
Also used in catering and as an infusion for humans, this hay has organoleptic qualities that should not leave your little companion indifferent, even if he is usually picky. Don’t you know what to choose? Try our discovery box instead, it will help your little companion choose from all of our hay varieties!
Vivienne’s take on the new 2021 crop:
History:
> Due to very rainy weather in Normandy, the first cut had to be made later making the hay thicker and yellow. We had to discard this cut.
> On the second cut following the presence of fern, we had to discard it too.
Hay currently sold:
>We are now on a third cut with thiner strands but it is also a hay that contains more flowers and plantain (hence the presence of more black leaves).
>Given the climatic factors, this crop is different from the previous years. We will offer this hay until June 2022 (the next harvest being in June 2022).
> This hay retains its nutritional values and continues to please my rabbits (Elvis particularly picky 🙂
