Learn more about wild thyme:
Wild thyme (Thymus serpyllum) is a perennial herbaceous plant in the Lamiaceae family. Native to Europe and Western Asia, wild thyme is widely distributed in temperate regions around the world. It generally grows in sunny, well-drained areas, such as meadows, moors and hills. The seasonality of wild thyme varies from region to region, but it is generally harvested during the summer months, from June to August, when the plant is at its peak of growth and its leaves are most aromatic. In physical terms, wild thyme is a creeping plant with small, oval leaves and pink or purple flowers grouped in spikes. Its leaves have an aromatic fragrance and a slightly peppery, lemony taste. In ancient times, Mediterranean civilizations used wild thyme for its antiseptic and disinfectant properties. Greek and Roman soldiers often used it to disinfect their wounds on the battlefield, and it was also used to treat respiratory ailments such as coughs and colds.
